Tipton Fire Department Cadet Program
In 1996, Tipton Fire Department implemented its own Cadet program which allowed high school students to join the department in a part observation, part participation program. In just under 10 years, Tipton's Cadet Program has seen over 20 students participate at different times (6 being females) making the program a success. Not only does it provide students with the opportunity to experience a possible career as a firefighter or a continued membership with the TFD, but it increases the response by the department to emergency situations. (Particularly during the day when many members are unable to respond)
While Tipton Fire Department was not the first to come up with this type of
program, the idea of letting high school students participate under regulated circumstances was not widely seen. Because of this, TFD had to research and fine-tune the rules and regulations for their own program. Listed below is the basic setup of the Tipton Fire Department's Cadet Program.

Cadets are allowed to respond with the TFD to all emergencies just like a full member. They  are allowed to wear their pagers during school hours and respond to calls so long as they do not skip a planned test/quiz, have the teacher's permission, and follow the rules below. Cadets cannot drive apparatus to the scene of an emergency and are required to ride in the rescue truck. (182) They cannot enter a burning building or equally hazardous situation  that would require the use of a SCBA. However, cadets can participate in structured training with the use of SCBA. They are allowed to participate in fire suppression tactics and duties outside of the structure, change/fill SCBA bottles, lay/pickup hose lines, run errands, and other duties that do not put them in harm's way.

Each month during meeting Trustees will report on attendance to drill and calls and open discussion regarding their status. If there is any concern regarding the cadets attendance, participation, attitude, or in the classroom, the trustees will meet with the subject.
Once the cadet has reached 18, they can apply for full department participation as a firefighter and be placed at the top of the waiting list if the department is already at full force.
